Retrofit insulation in Pueblo West, CO - a finished house that holds its heat
Drafty rooms, a hot upstairs, a power bill that won't quit? We add insulation to the house you live in, in the right order.

Can you add insulation to a house that's already finished?
Yes. Retrofit insulation means adding insulation to a house that's already built and lived in, usually loose fill blown over the attic floor and sometimes into the walls through small drilled holes. In Pueblo West, Sierra Pueblo West Spray Foam Insulation does this work so your house holds its heat better without tearing out drywall.
You live there, the drywall's up and the attic holds whatever the last owner left, so the plan has to fit the house as it is. That's why I look at the whole house before we touch anything, because a checkup shows which fix pays off first and keeps us from creating a new problem while fixing an old one. Price and schedule mostly turn on what's already up there, how many gaps need sealing, whether old material has to come out and whether the walls are part of it, and my estimate tells you what I'd do and in what order. Pueblo County doesn't allow most construction work without the right license or registration, and it's against the rules to hire someone who lacks it, so ask any contractor you call. We're licensed and fully insured.
What happens after you call about retrofit insulation in Pueblo West?
Call or send the form
You call (719) 601-8073 or send the form, and we get back to you to set a time for me to come out. Tell us the address and what you think is in the attic now, because that tells me what I'm walking into.
I go up and look
I go up in the attic or down in the crawl space myself and look for what insulation likes to hide, like old wiring, a bad flue, wet wood or old vermiculite. Then I write up what I'd do and in what order, so you see what each part is for, and I don't put work on it your house doesn't need.
Permits first, then the work
If the job needs a permit, we pull it ourselves after checking which office covers your address, since it differs between the city and the county. Our installers do the work, and I'm on site for most of it.
We walk the finished job
When we're done, I walk it with you so you can see the sealed gaps and the coverage out to the edges for yourself. Your satisfaction, guaranteed.
How we do retrofit insulation, and the attic and foam work around it
Attics are where things go to be forgotten, and insulation is good at hiding them, so the first job is finding problems while they're still easy to reach. Then we seal every opening through the attic floor, around can lights, pipes, wires and the hatch, because that cuts drafts and helps keep moisture out of the attic, and insulation laid over a gap just gets blown through. We set baffles at the eaves so the vents keep breathing and the fill doesn't spill into the soffits. The blown-in fill goes over the old floor insulation as evenly as we can get it and out to the top plate, the top edge of the wall framing, because the edges are where most attics come up thin. The usual guidance is to bring an attic to at least what the current energy code calls for, and Pueblo County adopted a newer one, so that's the bar I measure against.
Most retrofits are really attic insulation with the sealing done first, since that's usually where the biggest losses are and the easiest place to get at them. Spray foam insulation seals and insulates in one pass, but it costs a lot more than fiber and heat still slips through the wood studs, so I only recommend it when your ductwork lives in the attic or a spot can't be sealed any other way. Otherwise, sealing the gaps and topping up the loose fill gets you most of the way for less.

Retrofit insulation questions from Pueblo West
How much does retrofit insulation cost in Pueblo West?
There's no fair flat number, because the price is set by what's already in your house and what has to happen before new insulation goes in. Topping up a dry attic that's already partway there costs the least, while removing old material, sealing a lot of gaps, tight access, adding walls or choosing foam over loose fill all push it up. The on-site estimate gives you the plan for your house so you can price it.
How do I tell if my attic has vermiculite insulation, and should I take it out?
If it's a pebbly, pour-in fill that's gray-brown or silver-gold, treat it as vermiculite and leave it alone. The EPA advises assuming it may contain asbestos and not disturbing it, and if you do want it out, to use a trained, accredited asbestos abatement contractor separate from whoever assessed it. So I'll tell you what I see, but we won't be the ones pulling it out.
What is the best way to insulate finished walls without tearing them open?
Usually by drilling small holes, blowing loose fill like cellulose into each wall cavity, then plugging and patching the holes. Pueblo County's weatherization crews do it from outside, patching to match the siding texture and painting, and drill from inside when the outside can't be drilled. I'll tell you at the estimate whether your walls are worth doing, because the attic usually comes first.
Who handles building permits for insulation work around Pueblo?
Inside Pueblo City Limits and Boone, the Southern Colorado Building Department handles permits, and outside them the Pueblo County Building Division does. The county also started a new building department this year for permits and inspections in unincorporated areas, so offices you used before may have changed. When a job needs a permit, we check which office covers your address and pull it ourselves.
Is there free insulation help in Pueblo County?
Yes, Pueblo County's weatherization program is free to everyone who qualifies. The usual wait is about 90 to 120 days, emergencies go first, and on a rental the landlord may have to take part in a furnace replacement or electrical repairs. If you think you qualify, check with the county before you call anyone.
Do I need to remove old attic insulation before adding more?
Usually not, because dry, clean insulation can stay and new fill goes right over it. If it was soaked, is full of droppings or looks like vermiculite, putting new material on top just buries the problem, and I'll tell you which one you've got when I'm up there.
Work that often goes with a retrofit
Attic insulation
If the upstairs runs hot or the hatch lets in a draft, the attic is usually where your house loses the most and the easiest place to fix it.
Spray foam insulation
When ductwork runs through the attic or the room over the garage stays cold, foam can seal and insulate tight spots that loose fill can't reach.
